Round #3 of the District 6 Harescramble Series was hosted by Blue Comet MC this past Saturday in Skippack, PA. With unpredictable scattered showers forecasted throughout the weekend only one thing was certain – it was going to be muddy. And muddy it was although we did get lucky and didn’t get rained on, in fact the sun made an appearance a couple times throughout the day. The weather turned out to be perfect with temperatures in the upper 60’s to low 70’s, and with some cloud cover overhead made for a great day of racing. The track was the identical track from last year, it was short and tight. The club does a great job for the little land that they have to work with and this years event was no exception. Since the trail is so tight the track is mainly one lined and with all of the rain the track got rough – quick. The woods we super slick and the field switch back sections were so one lined that they were forming some rather deep ruts. Normally this isn’t a difficult track, but with the track conditions deteriorating each lap you had to concentrate and focus harder because it was easy for a little mistake turn into a costly one. It wasn’t 2 minutes into the first lap when I made my first mistake. I got a great start, the holeshot - first to the first turn. We headed into the first set of switch backs in the brush field and I went wide on a 180 degree turn and it was tight and my front wheel went right into the tree. I had to pull my bike back and while I did that I lost 4 spots just like that. I followed fellow racer Noah D. for the rest of the first lap when he took a header back in the woods on a nasty rut filled with some diagonal slick roots. From there I just set a good pace and pushed as hard as the trail would let me. I made two other small mistakes throughout the two hour race but the one that could have been most costly is when I tried jumping the long double in the field section. There isn’t much room before the jump to get a good run at it - last year I made it, but last year it was dry. This year with it being muddy I decided to roll it the first lap and then on the second lap I rounded the corner and let the clutch fly. I could feel my wheel spinning and not really hooking up but I went for it any how. I landed just short of the landing and I did a rodeo type of save which put me into some barrels which, I thank the lord, were not filled with anything. I managed to hold on and regroup and head back into the woods. It was brought to my knowledge that no one else was jumping the double so I’m okay with at least trying it.
For the rest of the race I felt great! Lappers became and issue after the half way mark because some of the creek sections were really getting chewed up and they were struggling with that. Physically I had no complaints, the weather was perfect so overheating was not an issue, and I didn’t feel sick to my stomach so everything was great. One of the AA riders crashed pretty hard and was carted off the track so I picked up another spot. When all was said and done I was still a long way from the leader, another AA rider, but I finished in 2nd place! My best finish in a really long time; since moving up to A class. And to top off a great day of racing and a good result I also had my best overall finish on time adjustment. That means that they adjust the times as if all the riders left the starting line at the same time. Total there were 57 riders and I was 3rd overall. It was a good day, a good race, good weather, good results, and good fans! Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the event. Special thanks to Mohar for picking up the pit duties, with last season under his belt he’s not a rookie anymore – he means business!
