NEOC Round #3 Irish Valley May 25th Race Recap!

Rround # 3 of the North East Off-Road Championship Series took place this past Sunday at Irish Valley MX Park, the same location of the 2nd Round of the East Coast Series which was held just two weeks ago. The weather was absolutely perfect and the track nearly resembled the same set up as the East Coast course. There were some additions and subtractions to the track but there were still lots of rocks, mud holes, roots, ruts, hill climbs, down hills, parts of the motocross track, open field sections and endurocross sections as there were two weeks ago. The NEOC runs a split race for amateurs in the morning and pro and semi-pro in the afternoon. DHaggs Sr. decided to jump into the morning race so that he could be a spectator for the afternoon race and help out our Pitman. Despite having some bike troubles right off the bat he put in a really good run and ran a hurried speed for a good portion of the race. He was running at the top of his class right up to the last lap when his leg decided to start cramping up which gave him some trouble pushing on the last lap. He managed to press on and when he got the checkered he finished 6th in his class.
I ran in the afternoon race and I got a terrible start. My bike didn’t start on the first kick so I had to double kick it and I was dead last to the first turn. That’s two bad starts in a row at this track! Since I was in the back it was extremely hard to see when we got onto the motocross track and into the field sections. The dust was blinding and at times I couldn’t even see my front wheel so I was forced to slow my pace a bit. As the dust settled along with my bad attitude about my start I managed to get back on pace and focus on going fast. Not only was I trying to go fast but I was trying to limit my mistakes to very few. It wasn’t till about the 3rd lap when I took a different line that I haven’t before and it turned out there was a huge draping tree vine there and it hooked my radiator shroud. I tried pulling it off but it was stuck, I gave it a good tug and it finally came off. It ended up cracking my shroud which surprisingly wasn’t noticeable till I examined the bike after the race. From then on I didn’t make any huge mistakes - didn’t stall the bike or get stuck, although a lapper did stop in front of me on a hill climb and that held me up for a good amount of time. There were some little mistakes here and there but for the most part I was charging and pushing ahead. The fourth lap I felt like I was racing the track and I felt comfortable on it, enough to push a little harder than I usually would. Not that I don’t usually push hard but I guess you can say I was riding a little out of my comfort zone at times, just trying to get relaxed while going faster than normal.
I made it a goal for the day to squeeze in an extra lap since Stoner passed me last race. Read the recap below and it will explain. I charged extra hard as the race clock ticked down and I saw him across the field; I wanted to get the white flag. He didn’t pass me this time so I was back out on the 10ish mile course for a fifth lap. On the fifth lap my hands were starting to get sore from blisters and I was starting to feel the wear and tear of the brutal track. I still had some endurance left so I managed to keep pushing till the checkered. The NEOC runs a two hour race plus one lap so I think that I was racing for 2 hours and 20, 30 minutes? I’ll know exactly when they post the results. I picked off 2 more positions on the last lap and I finished in 7th for the day. I’m happy with that but I still need and want to be more competitive. I am getting faster and I know that I have the conditioning program to allow me to push for the whole race. I need to put everything together and keep it consistent. I’ll try it again next weekend when we head to Franklin County for the South Penn Harescramble - Round #3 of the East Coast Harescramble Series.
Special thanks to my wife for coming out to show her support and take some awesome pictures. And Pitman Jimmy B was on hand again, and like always he manages to show up the other pitman around the track!

ECEA Round #2 Irish Valley May11th Race Recap!

The John Penton GNCC in Ohio is going to have to wait till next year. We originally planed to leave Fri at noon but with a dreadful weather forecast for Millfield we decided to push back our departure time to 2am Saturday morning giving us time to roll into the facility in time to catch the pro ATV’s on Sat. When I awoke at 1:30am I looked up the weather again and it called for rain and thunderstorms all day Sunday with a 90 percent chance. It’s not that we can't race in the muddy rainy conditions; it’s just that we didn’t want to drive 16 hours for it to be cancelled due to thunderstorms. So what did we do, we stayed packed and headed out the next morning to Paxious, PA for Round #2 of the East Coast Harescramble Series at Irish Valley MX Park. We were really bummed out that we were able to make the GNCC but after this weekend I’m pretty darn sure we made the right call.
We arrived at Irish Valley Raceway about mid afternoon, picked out a spot in the pits, set up camp, made some lunch and then decided to walk some of the 9 mile course. The weather was perfect; tons of sun and not a cloud to be found in the sky. Dusk rolled around and we fired up the grill again for some dinner and threw the NASCAR race on the TV, then it was early to bed to get a good night sleep. When we awoke Sunday morning we were blessed with a gorgeous view and the sound of dirt bike engines running as alarm clocks in the distance. We packed up camp a bit, registered to race, watched the kids race take off and then prepared for our race which was set to take off at 1, which turned out to be 1:30ish.
When the green flag dropped I kicked my bike, twisted the throttle, and got a bit of a bog out of my bike which cost me valuable seconds for the holeshot. I was pretty much dead last after the second turn. The first quarter mile they snaked you up and down a hill and then you headed out onto the motocross track for a mile and the rest of the course was made up of off camber, grass, endurocross, and rocky mountain trail sections. For some reason they decided to wet down the motocross track and it was super slick so when I came off a drop-off I pinned it and made one of the greatest saves I ever made. I can’t even explain it; let’s just say it looked like I was wrestling my bike as if it were a teased bull in front of a thousand taunting fans. I regained composure and tried to catch back up with the field, having never raced at this track before I was a little cautious on the first lap. At this level of competition this is not a good strategy, these guys take off and they don’t look back. I need to find the same attitude on the first lap, and keep it for the remainder of the race. I felt great physically and with the exception of a check and go on the first lap I pretty much went as fast as I could for the entire race. On the second lap I dialed in the rocky up hills that were tucked away in the misleading picturesque woods line. I also managed to find some traction in the grass off camber field sections. There was a bit of mud on the MX track but as far as out on the mountain there were two really bad sections. They were very technical but nothing crazy; the sections had some huge ruts with tons of exposed tree roots. It was on the third lap that I got cross rutted in the second swamp and went down. I got up pretty quick, got the bike started and continued on my way. When I came through the scanner after my third lap I was in eight place. I put my head down and charged on the fourth lap which was my fast lap all day. Just about a quarter mile before the finished I was passed by pro Jerod Stoner who was the overall leader. He took the checkered which meant that my race was over and I wasn’t able to go out for another lap. I was confused because I felt so good and I knew that I had a couple of laps still in me. After all was said and done I still held onto 8th place for the day. If I can just get over that first lap I would be able to stay with the meat of the pack and show them more of a tire. Overall I feel like I am learning more and more each week and getting a little bit faster, which is what this year was going to be about anyway. I just want to keep building up my experience and speed and continually keep giving my 110% effort, that’s the best I can do – and that’s what I’ve been doing!
DHaggs Sr. ended up in 11th place on the day after losing his shifter on a huge downhill on the second lap. He managed to find it and get himself out of the valley and back to the pits. This was his first mechanical mishap while out on the track.
Pitman Jimmy B continued his race appearance streak despite a nagging cold. He still managed to take some pictures and provide assistance where needed.
This weekend we have off and then racing will resume in a few weeks. Thanks for your support!

DHHR NEWS!!!

Due to unforeseen measures we will not be reaching our Ohio destination where we planned on racing in the John Penton GNCC. Instead we are rerouting to Paxious, PA to race the second round of the East Coast Series. It's a huge bummer but at least we will be able to race this weekend. Stay tuned early this week for the race recap and pictures. Thanks...

PA STATE Round #4 May 5th Race Recap

Round #4 of the PA State Harescramble Series was held this past Sunday at Evansville MX Park in Evansville, PA. For the first time this year we headed up into the mountains and left the flat, tight, whooped out tracks of New Jersey behind us. After practicing in the sand all winter, and having the first three events on the schedule in NJ, I was really anticipating getting back onto some technical rugged terrain that only the hills of up state Pennsylvania could provide. Without a doubt the track at Evansville MX Park delivered, this type of terrain is what should come to mind when someone mentions a true harescramble track. Due to some heavy rain Saturday night the track was shortened to about 4 and a half miles which, is about less than half of a normal race track.
There were no signs of rain from above when we rolled into the pits before we unpacked. The track had some huge water puddles on it and the younger kids that went before us were caked in mud but it looked as if the track was going to shape up adequately. Just as we rolled to the starting line the sun started to shine and there wasn’t a cloud to be found in the sky.
Since this is a PA State round they do not have a pro line so that meant that all pros and A riders were to start off the same line. I was 4 from the inside and I got a good jump but there were a lot of riders to the outside who kind of pinched me off in the first turn. I have no idea where I was in the pack because it was such a mad rush off the line. We wrapped around the motocross track and down and up some screaming up hills and then we went into the woods. At the bottom of one of the hills a pack of us went through a huge muddy water hole and I was completely blinded with mud. The muddy water splashed under my roll offs making them useless so when we got into the woods I had to get rid of them. I saw Pitman Jimmy B when I came around for my second lap and then we made a short pit for some new goggles so that I would be able to see. It wasn’t long after we entered the woods until we hit a really tricky uphill. It was warn out from the kids before us who exposed a lot of tree roots and rocks. The hill was so steep which made it especially harder to find some traction to get some momentum. There were people stuck all over it too which meant that the good lines were taken and you had to gamble a bit to try and find another line up the mountain. Throughout the day no matter who was stuck on the hill or how the track workers switched up the track I managed to make it up all the hill climbs each time without putting out too much effort. As the race went on I maintained a good attitude, which was my goal for the day, and put my head down and rode my own race. Since the PA Series doesn’t have barcode scoring there was no scanner to show your position or lap time. I had no idea where I was throughout the race but that didn’t stop me from going as fast as I could for as long as I could. I made some really good decisions in the woods and I was smooth in the really rough stuff. I rode a good race, had a better attitude, and felt a lot better being up in the mountains again. After the results were posted I came in 10th place, which is acceptable on my terms considering I started on the same line as the pro riders. It was a good confidence booster for next week’s race.
DHaggs Sr. put in some hot laps as well finishing 4th in his class. He also mentioned that he made some good decisions back in the woods while he man handled the crazy up hills as well. He had some time off the bike so putting in a near miss at the podium is pretty impressive for a track like that.
Pitman Jimmy B continues to impress for the 2008 season. He’s back and feeling healthy after being sidelined last year with some back complications. He has been sharpening up his pit skills each week and looks forward to leading the team with his veteran knowledge, something that distingues him from “fill in” pit persons.
This weekend we are headed to OHIO for the John Penton GNCC. John Penton was the guy who brought KTM to America so this race is held to acknowledge his contribution to off-road racing in the US and it should be a lot of fun to attend. Race info for Round #6 of the Can-Am GNCC series is already posted on the site. Thanks for your support!
